Database engine developer MongoDB recently announced the acquisition of artificial intelligence startup Voyage AI, with a transaction amount of up to US$220 million. The acquisition is intended to help businesses reduce the “illusion” that may arise in their AI applications and enhance the reliability and accuracy of their products.
Dev Ittycheria, President and CEO of MongoDB, said in a statement that Voyage AI's technology will be deeply integrated with MongoDB, which can effectively reduce the workload of developers in managing external embedded APIs, independent vector storage or complex search pipelines. Through such integration, developers can focus more on building high-quality AI applications without having to deal with tedious technical details.
Voyage AI is highly regarded in the Hugging Face community, especially in terms of the performance of its zero-sample model. Ittycheria stressed that combining Voyage AI’s retrieval capabilities with MongoDB will enable organizations to more easily develop more accurate and reliable AI applications, avoiding unnecessary complexity.
The integration process will be divided into three stages. In the first phase, Voyage AI's text embedding, multi-modal embedding and re-ranking models will be widely provided through the existing APIs and AWS and Azure markets. In the second stage, MongoDB will directly embed the functions of Voyage AI into MongoDB Atlas, especially the automatic embedding service for vector search. This service will automatically handle embedding generation, which greatly facilitates developers. Finally, MongoDB will add advanced AI retrieval capabilities and enhance multi-mode functions to further enhance the overall capabilities of the product.
